With Goodfriend's Grill at Ray's Bistro inside the Marcus Hillel Center at Emory, kosher food at Emory has never been the same - nor will it ever again. The food is not only delicious and well priced. It also has become a beacon for students, faculty and community members alike creating a veritble melting pot of Jews and non-Jews from all over campus.
Reviewed recently by The Emory Wheel, Hillel's kosher eatery got thumbs up for its variety and student-friendly prices. It also was the subject of a recent column in the Atlanta Jewish Times by Dr. Mark L. Fisher, a local college and career consultant and college counselor for Yeshiva Atlanta.
As the Emory campus begins to empty out for the American holiday of Thanksgiving, we might ask: What's Jewish about it this holiday? Thankfully, we have Rabbi Michael Broyde, professor of law at Emory Law and the academic director of the Law and Religion Program at Emory University, to help us reflect on this question.
On Monday, August 30, Hillel held its annual Welcome Back BBQ at Bama. With its prime location right in the center of campus next to the DUC, this event is always a popular way to get back into the swing of Hillel. This year was different, however, because Goodfriend’s catering services did the cooking. Instead of students grilling, Goodfriend’s turned our ordinary kosher BBQ upside-down.
Former Hillel student president, Robert Bernton (B'09), has recently launched a new company called “The Kosher Express”. The company’s mission is to deliver high quality kosher meat directly to the consumer’s door.
During his freshman year, Rob successfully led an effort to create a kosher meal plan on campus. Soon after its inception, students began to gather from across the University twice a week to eat, shmooze, and have fun. Sometimes talking for hours, students used this kosher meal plan as a vehicle to improve their experience on campus. (Since then Emory University has adopted a full-scale kosher meal plan offering 11 meals per week.)
