Oncologist Speaks to JHealth Group

Oncologist Speaks to JHealth Group

On Sunday, students in the Tritt & Oppenheimer JHealth Leadership Institute met at Hillel to hear from guest speaker Dr. Bruce Feinberg, founding president and CEO of Georgia Cancer Specialists and current vice president and medical director of Cardinal Health, a worldwide distributor of medical supplies.

His insight into the world that the students will one day enter was invaluable as he discussed important aspects of their future career, such as what the business model of a clinical practice is and how to manage the doctor-patient relationship. He also talked about the deeper meaning of being in the healthcare industry and the rewards and challenges of helping others.

Dr. Feinberg told students about working in his father’s clothing store when he was growing up and about how he decided to become a doctor.

He discussed how cancer treatment is unique in that it forces one to confront life’s ultimate question: death. These are all problems that students looking toward healthcare positions will almost certainly face.

As a doctor, he said, it is his job to maintain his composure while talking to his patients and offering care. It is difficult to find just the right balance between being too emotional or too detached. He views his role as the person to bring order to the chaos that comes with having cancer. It helps to find balance as the physician and makes treatment easier for patients to bear.
