A Look at Kosher Food on Campus

Posted in Student Life

With Goodfriend's Grill at Ray's Bistro inside the Marcus Hillel Center at Emory, kosher food at Emory has never been the same - nor will it ever again. The food is not only delicious and well priced. It also has become a beacon for students, faculty and community members alike creating a veritble melting pot of Jews and non-Jews from all over campus.

Reviewed recently by The Emory Wheel, Hillel's kosher eatery got thumbs up for its variety and student-friendly prices. It also was the subject of a recent column in the Atlanta Jewish Times by Dr. Mark L. Fisher, a local college and career consultant and college counselor for Yeshiva Atlanta.

Fisher points out that for many college-bound students, the accessibility of kosher food is a priority. Emory University has been relatively late to the game with fits and starts to its kosher meal plan over the years, but as of two years ago, a kosher meal plan is now firmly established. Students on the kosher meal plan get glatt kosher lunches at the DUC and dinners at the Marcus Hillel Center.

For some universities, a kosher meal plan is a recruiting tool. For others, it is a way to meet the needs of students like those who are vegetarian or gluten free. At Emory, it is a way to foster community. Those who keep kosher, as well as those who do not (including non-Jews) find Hillel's eatery to be a friendly and tasty alternative to the other dining options on campus.
