So what would happen if you got an email one day with your personal, private reflections that you wrote down a year ago. I would probably not really remember ever writing it, and I expect I would be a bit surprised at what I was thinking and feeling a mere 365 days ago. I might also discover something real - a bit of truth about who I am...what's fleeting, what sticks.
The idea sounds kind of cool, so I signed up for this new website, which does exactly this.
Former Hillel student president, Robert Bernton (B'09), has recently launched a new company called “The Kosher Express”. The company’s mission is to deliver high quality kosher meat directly to the consumer’s door.
During his freshman year, Rob successfully led an effort to create a kosher meal plan on campus. Soon after its inception, students began to gather from across the University twice a week to eat, shmooze, and have fun. Sometimes talking for hours, students used this kosher meal plan as a vehicle to improve their experience on campus. (Since then Emory University has adopted a full-scale kosher meal plan offering 11 meals per week.)
Hillel is constantly changing to keep pace with college students. With the advent of the annual Beloit College Mindset List, Hillel offers the following unscientific survey of Jewish cultural influences that have helped shape the identities of this year’s freshman class.
Born largely in 1992, today’s freshmen will delight – if not surprise – their parents by becoming the graduating class of 2014 in four years. Here, then, are the Jewish ideas that are kicking around in the minds of today’s first-year students.
Virtual communities for creative Shabbat celebrations
Hillel professionals across North America joined together this Shabbat for the first week of The Shabbat Experiment. I created the Shabbat Experiment to challenge Hillel professionals to celebrate Shabbat not just with their students or for work, but with their friends and for themselves. Over the course of the next 10 weeks, groups of Hillel professionals will complete creative challenges that are related to 10 core values of Shabbat. Follow their experiences, experiments, creations, and reflections at The Shabbat Experiment blog.
More than 400 people - freshmen, families, and current student leaders - packed into the Marcus Hillel Center this morning for Hillel’s annual Bagel Brunch. Held for the first time in the new center, the Brunch is an annual tradition that kicks off the new school year with a lot of positive energy. Goodfriend's Grill served up freshly baked H&H bagels, direct from Manhattan.
Hillel student leaders looked great in orange “Hillel Depot” shirts, a tribute to Home Depot co-founder Bernie Marcus whom the center is named for. Hillel student leaders, organized by Freshman Orientation Chair Erika Reif, and staff greeted parents into the new building.
Seventeen Jewish student groups at Emory had representatives at a fair showcasing a literal buffet of opportunities to get connected to Jewish life on campus. From Jewish fraternities and sororities to Israel advocacy and social justice groups, Hillel is proud to serve as a platform for diverse Jewish campus life.
As a recent article in the New York Times suggests, the bagel brunch is a truly significant event in the lives of these families. Hillel creates a special venue for students and parents to say farewell in the context of the supportive, nurturing community
